Now that summer is in full swing, one thing you have to make sure is you’re staying hydrated. Our bodies are made up of over 60 percent of water which aids in digestion, the release of toxins and so much more, so it’s safe to say water is a key compound for us to consume so that we can function properly. If drinking the daily recommended 8 glasses a day seems like a dreadful task, a fun and easy way to increase your water intake is to simply eat your water! That’s right! There are so many fruits and veggies that are naturally loaded with water that will leave you get you healthy and hydrated and getting your dose of key vitamins and minerals. And did I mention low in calories?
Let’s start with the fruit that speaks for itself:
Watermelon, as the name implies, is literally made up of 92% water while still being a nutrient dense food. This juicy, cooling fruit is packed with vitamins and lycopene which is a powerful cancer fighting antioxidant found in red fruits and veggies that help fight off free radicals. Blend fresh watermelon and strawberries together for a refreshing morning smoothie.
Strawberries (all berries)
Speaking of strawberries, they make the list, along with other berries like blue, black and raspberry as a hydrating food coming in at 90% water. For a healthy breakfast, top your oatmeal or yogurt with a handful of berries for added antioxidants, hydration and to help keep your blood sugar levels low.
Citrus fruits like grapefruit and oranges are made up of 87%water and packed with vitamin C and potassium. Grapefruit is also known to aid in weight loss due to a compound found that helps burn fat and reduces cravings. This is one of my favorite quick and easy snacks on the go.
This crunchy vegetable beats watermelon and is known as having the highest water content of a solid food coming in at 96% water! Cucumbers contain multiple B vitamins and minerals full of anti-inflammatory properties that give you a natural energy boost and keep the skin looking refreshed. One of my favorite snacks is sliced cucumbers and hummus…delish!
This veggie isn’t just to decorate your buffalo wings order. Comprised of 95% water, celery has powerful antioxidants that help to lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation and treat high blood pressure. So the next time your plate comes with a side of celery, take a bit of two and don’t let it to waste.
